Statement of EDF President Fred Krupp on oil & gas CEOs calling for carbon pricing
“To avert the worst impacts of climate change and achieve shared global prosperity, we need limits on climate pollution – and a price on emissions to drive reductions as efficiently and as fairly as possible. I am pleased to see six of the world’s major oil and gas companies not only support a price on climate pollution, but pledge to be part of the solution by working actively with governments and civil society to deliver results.
“The test of any climate policy is whether it will deliver the ambitious reductions that science demands, while sparking the innovation and jobs that can spur a low-carbon economy. With emission trading systems in effect in nearly 50 jurisdictions home to nearly a billion people, we know how to design and implement effective policies that put a price on climate pollution and deliver real reductions.
“We also know how to get started on real reductions from the oil and gas sector: Stop fugitive emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide over the next twenty years. BG, ENI, Statoil, and Total have joined the UN’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership to help reduce these potent emissions. We applaud their leadership and hope that BP, Shell, and others will also soon join.
“EDF is pleased to see this public statement of support for a price on carbon. Let’s get on with the urgent business at hand: turning the corner toward climate stability and a new era of clean, low-carbon prosperity.”
