New York State Senate Includes Climate Resilient New York Act in the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget
Statement of Kate Boicourt, Director for Climate Resilient Coasts and Watersheds program in New York-New Jersey, Environmental Defense Fund
(ALBANY, NEW YORK – March 12, 2025) - This week the New York State Senate announced the inclusion of the Climate Resilience New York Act of 2025, proposed legislation S3590, in their fiscal year 2026 one-house budget. The bill aims to establish an Office of Resilience within the state’s government and develop a statewide plan to address impacts from climate-driven storms and natural disasters.
“New York communities are already feeling the effects of climate change, resulting in devastating consequences from more frequent and severe weather and disasters. Extreme hurricanes, heatwaves and droughts have so far cost lives and billions of dollars in damage, while leaving communities trapped in temporary fixes rather than lasting solutions.
“Environmental Defense Fund and stakeholders believe actions included in the Climate Resilient New York Act will be a critical step in ensuring state agencies have a coordinated strategy to prepare New York for extreme weather and build resilient communities. We applaud the Senate for including this bill in the upcoming budget as well as Senator Peter Harckham’s leadership in carrying the bill.”
With more than 3 million members, Environmental Defense Fund creates transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. To do so, EDF links science, economics, law, and innovative private-sector partnerships to turn solutions into action. edf.org
